Finding My Heart's Place at Camp Ojiketa

At the age of seven I made one of the most significant decisions of my life based on color preference.  I chose Camp Fire over Girl Scouts because Blue Birds wore red, white and blue while Brownies wore, well...you get the gist.  Although I was not so interested in the achievement of beads, patches or the Wo-He-Lo medallion I was an active participant until I graduated from high school – and then I went on to become professional staff for five years.  Now I’m on the Board of Directors of Camp Fire USA Minnesota Council.

We are the Hullett-Nelson family and we have one daughter.  Her name is Murphy. She is 11 years old, and boy does she love camp!

We originally found out about Camp Tanadoona through a neighbor who sent her kids for one overnight week each summer.  As a working mom, it is always important to make meaningful decisions regarding how summers are spent.

Some Things Don't Change

I first went to Tanadoona as a Camp Fire leader taking my Camp Fire club to day camp for a week.  The kids were in 2nd grade and excited to be there, scrambling down the path to our assigned camp site.  Everyday, the kids had to gather wood for the fire at our camp site so we could cook our lunch.  Many of my memories of camp revolve around the sound of twigs snapping, the smell of the camp fire, cooking and singing around the camp fire.
